Virtual museums, new media arts and sound archives
DOI Livro 10.34619/hwfg-s9yyVirtual museums are new ways of promoting cultural experiences and are also important repositories for safeguarding new examples of artistic, cultural and social heritage, with the added advantage of being potentially global. They have been adapted to collect digital artefacts and new forms of intangible art, which are, generally speaking, media arts. In this sense, virtual museums are also a challenging place for the collection of sound contents. Considering the Portuguese example, where there is a legal vacuum in terms of archive policies for sound, this text examines the opportunity that platforms of this kind may represent for the preservation of sonic-based memories. Prepared under the scope of the research project Audire: Saving Sonic-Based Memories, which is currently being developed at the Communication and Society Research Centre, University of Minho, this text also discusses the role that governments should play in defining parameters for the creation of sound libraries. This work was produced under the scope of the project Audire – Audio Repository: Saving Sonic-Based Memories, co-funded by the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation and by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (PTDC-COM-CSS/32159/2017)
do Minho.
No primeiro capítulo procedemos à caraterização do
This paper, entitled The Didactic Resources in Philosophy Teaching-Learning Process in
Secondary Education, is the probation report by Cláudia Marina Teixeira Martinho. It was carried
out in the course of the Philosophy Teaching Master in Secondary Education, in the University of
Minho. The probationary period took place in Alberto Sampaio Secondary School, in Braga, in the
2011/2012 school year. It was conducted with 10th-grade students who were taught the
following philosophy branches: ethics, political philosophy and philosophy of art.
Throughout the report we vindicate that the didactic resources used in the classroom have
a great impact on philosophy teaching-learning process in secondary education. Thus, during the
probationary period, we found it pertinent to use different strategies and pedagogical resources
which might promote the learning, the interest, the motivation and the students’ academic
success.
The paper is formed by an introduction, three main chapters, a conclusion, bibliographical
references and annexes. In the first chapter we characterise the context in which the pedagogical
probationary period occurred and present the school and the class where our general plan of
intervention was executed, as well as the goals and the strategies which guided it. In the second
chapter, we explain, on one hand, what didactic resources are and their importance in the
teaching-learning process, and, on the other hand, describe our teaching practice and its
respective structure in class. The third and final chapter deals with the assessment of our
pedagogic intervention which was based on the implementation of the Supervised Pedagogical
Intervention Project
Interview with Hildegard Westerkamp: “once you start listening to the world you are dealing with all of life”
English version: Oliveira, M., & Martinho, C. (2021). Interview with Hildegard Westerkamp: “once you start listening to the world you are dealing with all of life”.
sentiente do corpo.
da nossa relação com o meio ambiente.[Excerpt] Picture postcards are partly responsible for the visual relationship we still have with
urban places today. They used to fix images of villages and cities and draw our attention
to what can be seen. Cities are, however, places that can also be experienced and described
in aural terms. They are a kind of auditorium, where the noise of traffic combines
with birdsong. The experience of conscious listening — which has been analysed more
intensively since the 1970s — is a way of getting to know one’s environment, as well as
a way of preserving the body’s sentient nature. In this interview — which was recorded
in January 2021 as part of the project “AUDIRE. Audio Repository: saving sonic-based
memories” — Hildegard Westerkamp explains how original and unique a soundwalk
can be and how inspiring or disturbing the urban acoustic experience can be today. The
concept of soundscape and the notion of conscious listening are here considered fundamental
to understanding our relationship with the environment.

Between tree lovers and tree haters. Drivers of public perception regarding street trees and its implications on the urban green infrastructure planning
Street trees can play an important role in the urban green infrastructure (UGI). However, changes in the urban fabric often have perverse effects on the structure, diversity, and performance of street trees, and, consequently, on their perception by the public. This research explores public perception of the current street tree adequacy in a coastal neighborhood of Porto that went through a major densification in its urban fabric during the second half of the 20th century. The research methodology included: i) a survey to evaluate public perception of tree services and disservices, and public perception of the adequacy of street trees in the study area; and ii) two Logit models relating public perception of tree services with the characteristics of respondents and streets. 96% of the respondents self-reported as tree lovers. However, more than 30% found the street trees of the study area inadequate to the present urban fabric and 5% have already made a complaint to the municipality. Characteristics of respondents and streets affect respondent’s perceptions. Education plays a key role in the acknowledgment of tree services. Older respondents are more likely to perceive trees as dangerous. Respondents who live on streets dominated by Black Poplar are more likely to dislike trees. Results implications on UGI planning and design advise an adjustment of tree dimensions to street dimensions, an increase in street tree diversity, and an improved street planting design. Results also suggest that an investment in education and information could lead to conflict mitigation.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Five hundred and seventy six laying hens, 288 from white-egg and 288 from brown-egg, were used during four experimental periods of 28 days each. A complete randomized blocks design in a fatorial arangement (level x trademarks), with six replicates (eight birds/replicate), was used. The treatments consisted on a basal diet with 14.2% crude protein supplemented with 0.025, 0.050, 0.075, 0.100, and 0.125% of L-threonine providing a total of 0.510, 0.535, 0.560, 0.585, 0.610, and 0.635% of threonine. The productive performance and internal egg quality were evaluated. Feed intake, egg production, egg mass and weight gain were superior for the brown-egg laying hens. Egg production and internal egg quality, feed: gain ratio, body weight gain were not influenced by the used threonine levels. The level of 0,510% of threonine, that correspond to 515 mg/hen·day (0,423% of digestible threonine) and 535 mg/hen·day (0,440% of digestible threonine), was sufficient to meet the performance and to the internal egg quality for the studied characteristics of both white-egg and brown-egg laying hens, respectively
Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone
As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
